Cassandra DeBaets moved to Alaska in 2015 to get a fresh start in the mental health and recovery field. After having experienced trauma, homelessness, addiction, and then recovery, she went to college in 2010 in Portland, OR to work on counseling certification. After peer mentoring for Outside In, the nonprofit that helped her recover, she helped to develop another burgeoning Portland non-profit called Outside the Frame. She decided she’d rather be closer to folks than counselors usually are, so with a lifetime of experience, a few years of college, and ten years strong in recovery, she set out to make mentoring a career.
Cassandra believes in the awesome power of community, faith, paying it forward, service, and recreation. She enjoys video games, music, adventure, reading, philosophizing, daydreaming, imagination, laughter, cartoons, learning, trivia, petting cats and dogs, and spending time with her kids.
Cassandra is currently working on Peer Mentor training and certification, and is looking forward to learning a lot from the rest of the Web team and Web consumers.
